137 Pillars House Chiang Mai

For travelers visiting Chiang Mai, Thailand, I highly recommend booking a stay at 137 Pillars House.

After experiencing such a wonderful stay at the resort’s sister property, 137 Pillars Suites & Residences in Bangkok, I knew that my experience in Chiang Mai would be nothing short of amazing.

137 Pillars House is the epitome of a luxurious experience. The staff on the property go above and beyond to make sure your stay is both comfortable and enjoyable. I just cannot sing enough praises about the wonderful time I had there when I visited Chiang Mai.

From check-in to check out, the staff was attentive to my every need; they even went as far as assisting my fiance with arranging his proposal, and I could not have been more thankful for the time I was able to spend there.

The History & Culture of 137 Pillars House

One of the main reasons that I chose to stay at 137 Pillars House outside of its beauty and the extensive numbers of awards the property received, was the history of the property.

While traveling, I love finding properties that help you to feel like you are fully immersed in the culture and history of the country; and 137 Pillars House does just that.

The main house (and focal point of the property, pictured above) was built by Louis Leonowens, the son of famed Anna Leonownes who inspired Anna and the King.

The house was originally owned by British-owned Borneo Company, one of the first foreign companies in Thailand. It then changed hands several times before coming under the ownership of the Japanese during World War II. Later, it was sold to a Scotsman named William Bain, and eventually, the Bain family sold it to a Thai company that renamed it 137 Pillars House for the 137 Pillars on the main building.

The Rooms at 137 Pillars House

The 30 suites at 137 Pillars House were outstanding. I stayed in the spacious Rajah Brooke Suite, which came with:

  • A king-size bed
  • An indoor/outdoor bathroom with a garden shower
  • A spacious entryway with a full-sized desk
  • An outdoor patio equipped with a daybed
  • A butler
  • Breakfast
  • Airport pickup service

Some of my favorite touches about the room were the teak wood and the warm colors of the decor. It made the room feel very inviting and homey. It truly felt like a home away from home and I wished that I could have spent more time there.

Another one of my favorite parts of the room was the semi-private outdoor covered patio. I spent many hours lounging on the patio’s daybed and relaxing.

Additionally, I loved the bathroom, which was beyond stunning.

The bathroom was separated into five parts: a sink area, a toilet area, an area for the bathtub, an indoor shower area, and an outdoor garden shower area. I have never been in a bathroom that is quite as well planned out and beautifully designed as the one on the property.

Outside of the room, some of my favorite parts of 137 Pillars House were the Lanna Style Thai main building, Jack Bain’s Bar, The Dining Room, and the Swimming Pool.

Jack Bain’s Bar

Named after the previous owner of the property, Jack Bain’s Bar is a wonderful place to go relax and have a few cocktails.

The Swimming Pool

The swimming pool is a nice place to relax after spending a day traveling around Chiang Mai. I absolutely love the bush-covered wall on the side of the pool.
