When I pulled up in my taxi to the front of the Protea Fire & Ice hotel after arriving in Cape Town, I was immediately in awe of the glow that the hotel seemed to exude.
I stepped out of my cab and walked up to the front desk where I was immediately greeted by the smiling and cheerful faces of the staff. The check-in was quick and efficient and it made the transition into the hotel quick and easy.
As I was being escorted to my room, I was shown the unique elevators of the hotel that displayed some of the most popular activities in the city: shark diving and riding the gondola up to table mountain. I stepped into the elevator that was decorated like a shark cage and made my way up to my room.
My initial reaction to my room was similar to that of arriving at the hotel: the name of the property certainly was aligned with the theme: there were beautiful colored lights over the window and a red (fire) and white (ice) headboard.
The Rooms
One thing that I found interesting about the guest room was that the shower and bed were in the same space and were only separated by a curtain. I initially thought that I was going to flood the bedroom with the shower, but fortunately, the water did not travel from the shower area into the sleeping area.
Another thing that I loved about the room was the large floor to ceiling window in my room that overlooked Table Mountain, it certainly was a nice view to wake up to in the morning.
The Location
In addition to being a really cool and modern hotel, the Protea Fire and Ice is also in a great location near the City Center that is easily accessible from all points in the city.
Table Mountain is a mere 15 minutes by taxi, the V&A Waterfront is about 12 minutes away by taxi, and Long Street and the neighborhood of Bo Kaap are only a few blocks away.
The Bar & Restaurant
The bar at the Fire & Ice hotel is one of the hottest places to go in the city for a drink, and according to Cape Town Magazine, Friday and Saturday Night DJ Sessions are especially awesome and have “party people unwinding, grooving and chatting in a scene that could come straight out of an upmarket Ibiza beach club.”
Unfortunately, during my trip, I stayed during weekday nights, so I was not able to fully experience the lively party atmosphere, but on the nights that I was there, the bar was full of young guests and locals happily sipping down cocktails and drinking the famous milkshakes that Protea is known for.
In the mornings during my stay, I ate at the lovely little restaurant on the lower level. They had a delicious breakfast buffet with a large variety of food options from fruits to meats, to bread.
The Pool
One of the best things about Fire & Ice is the property’s beautiful pool. Unfortunately, it was a little chilly during my stay so I was not able to fully immerse myself in its waters, but when I return to the city, I will make sure to take a nice dip in it.
In addition to having a super cool pool that is illuminated at night, next to the pool is a beautiful little lounge area with wide windows overlooking the pool to the west and Table Mountain to the east. There is even a nice little balcony to hang out on on the side opposite the pool.
The Cost
The Protea Fire & Ice Cape Town is an affordable place to stay in the city with rooms averaging $114 per night. Additionally, the hotel is a Marriott property (Category 3) and therefore, the rooms can also be booked using Marriott Rewards Points.
Overall
I really enjoyed my stay at the Protea Fire & Ice Cape Town. The staff was friendly, the room was comfortable, the hotel was beautiful and very clean, and the food was good. I would highly recommend staying at this hotel during your trip to Cape Town.
FTC Disclosure: I was a guest of the Protea Fire & Ice Cape Town for two nights during my stay in the city and I was provided with complimentary breakfast during my stay. As always, all opinions of the properties that I stay at are my own.
