The Protea Fire & Ice Melrose Arch, owned by Marriott, is a hotel located in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa and is part of the largest hotel chains on the continent of Africa. When planning your trip to the city, consider checking out this hotel!
The Rooms
The Protea Fire & Ice Melrose Arch has a total of 197 glamorous rooms that honor legendary pop culture icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.
The standard room that I stayed in was lavishly decorated and was fit for a princess! The carpet was painted with rose petals that trailed from the bed to the window overlooking the shopping center; long mirrors hung on every wall of the room, and a beautiful silver lamp draped down from the ceiling and shone its light over my see-through desk.
The bed was extremely comfortable and plush and had a beautiful feminine design with black and white photographs on top of the bed.
Similar to my room at the Protea Fire & Ice Cape Town, the Melrose Arch location also features an in-room shower next to the bed (and I also managed not to flood this room either!)
The Location
The Protea Fire & Ice Melrose Arch is located in one of Johannesburg’s most affluent suburbs about 10 km outside of the city center.
Surrounding the hotel is Melrose Arch, which has a large number of shops and restaurants, including the well-known Moyo, which offers a uniquely South African dining experience.
The hotel can be reached via car or via the Gautrain bus (RB2).
The Bar & Restaurant
Get milkshake-wasted
Known for “haute cuisine breakfasts, lunches and dinners”, the food at the hotel certainly does not disappoint.
Things not to miss: the breakfast buffet has a wide variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food options and their milkshakes (both alcoholic and virgin) are simply divine!
Property & Amenities
The Protea Fire & Ice Melrose Arch has a number of great amenities including a beautiful outdoor pool, a terrace to relax on, a decent-sized gym, conference rooms, underground parking, multiple lounge areas, and complimentary wifi.
One thing that I wish I could have experienced during my stay was the beautiful pool (pictured in the cover photo). If the weather had been slightly warmer during my trip, this definitely would have been one of my favorite places to hang out at the hotel.
The Cost
For a 4-star hotel located in a shopping area, the Fire & Ice Melrose Arch is a great bargain with rooms starting around $125 per night.
Overall
Overall, I had an amazing stay at the Protea Fire & Ice Melrose Arch. The staff was very friendly and professional, the food was good, and the bed was super comfortable (that alone is enough for me to give it high marks). Finally, I loved the shared spaces in the hotel, and I especially loved the design of my room.

FTC Disclosure: I was a guest of the Protea Fire & Ice Melrose Arch for two nights during my stay in the city and I was provided with complimentary breakfast during my stay. As always, all opinions of the properties that I stay at are my own.
Definitely my kind of hotel!! I love the contemporary decor. I can’t wait! And did you say alcoholic shakes? 🙂
Yes, they were the best milkshakes ever! 😀
