Saturdays in Cape Town are a great time to indulge in food, do a little shopping, and listen to some great live music.
The Old Biscuit Mill, a small little area located in Cape Town’s Woodstock neighborhood, is comprised of little shops and restaurants, office space, and plays host to a weekly event on Saturdays called the Neighbourgoods Market.
Neighbourgoods Market
The Old Biscuit Mill comes alive on Saturdays during its weekly Neighbourgoods Market, where hundreds of tourists and residents flock to enjoy fresh foods from local vendors, buy some uniquely South African items, and listen to some local bands.
Dozens of vendors sell various items ranging from clothing, to jewelry, to home goods.
While the price of some of the items at the market can be quite steep, there are also some good deals to be had if you check around.
In addition to all of the clothing and accessories you can buy at the Neighbourgoods Market, there is a wide variety of fresh and delicious foods to be had: from paella, to grilled mushrooms on a skewer, to fresh juices.
The Test Kitchen
The Test Kitchen, located in the Old Biscuit Mill, is one of the finest restaurants in the world and is consistently ranked year after year on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
One thing that I loved about visiting the Test Kitchen was how affordable it was, despite it being one of the world’s most internationally recognized restaurants. I had sticker shock (in a good way) when paid only R470 (~$38 USD) for their 5-course lunch menu!
In addition to being extremely inexpensive for such a high-quality restaurant, the food was absolutely delicious and the presentation of the food was outstanding.

Wine at the Mill
No post about South Africa and food would be complete without mentioning wine, and you can find a great selection of South African wines at affordable prices at Wine at The Mill, a wine shop located in The Old Biscuit Mill.
South African wine is a great gift to bring back home to friends and family. If you don’t want to lug bottles of wine from South Africa to your home, Wine at The Mill will ship the wine for you for a fee.
The staff is extremely helpful at helping to select wines for your personal taste and price point, but if you want a handy guide on which South African wines would be best for you, check out this great guide by Serious Eats.
*Note: Only 5 bottles of wine can be carried out of South Africa per person.
